A robust high school education includes learning how to critically engage with dark chapters in human history.
The Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center (HERC) came to Neue Now with an ambitious goal. They sought to help teachers confidently, respectfully, and responsibly discuss genocide and the Holocaust with their students, while opening up a conversation about how society can prevent similar crises from arising in the future.
We used HERC’s curricular model—including 125 lessons organized into four domains—as the framework for a new digital tool: the Holocaust Education Map.
We approached the map as a product designed around the needs of teachers in Wisconsin. Each lesson includes relevant reference materials, citations, suggested discussion questions, and state academic requirements. We also provided ready-made collections to speed up the lesson-planning process.
Clear navigation was the guiding principle for every design decision. Thoughtful filters and clear processes throughout the website make it easy for busy teachers to find exactly what they need.
To make the most of this new offering, the Holocaust Education Map also got its own visual identity to complement the HERC brand, drawing on archival photography and map iconography.
The Holocaust Education Map points teachers in the right direction. We placed a compass motif at the center of the visual identity to emphasize HERC’s role as a trustworthy guide.
The brand uses collages of photographs and illustrations to add texture, depth, and humanity to the subject matter.
HERC built its curriculum around four domains to ensure that Holocaust education is balanced and comprehensive. We made them the pillars of the digital experience.
The four domains appear throughout the site to help teachers navigate it: in the navigation, in the filtering tools, and on individual lesson plans.
To prepare teachers to take on a complex subject, we included features tailored to their needs.
The map offers lesson pairs, pre-made collections, and simple bookmarking features to reduce friction at every step and make it easy for educators to find what they need.
